
In 2009, Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks created Black Girls RUN! in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners. The mission of Black Girls RUN! is to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80% of African-American women are overweight. BGR! wants to create a movement to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.
BGR! is a growing assembly here in New Orleans–a running/walking group striving to increase the presence of African American women in the running community. The New Orleans chapter of Black Girls Run! will host a meet and greet/Ladies Night at Southern Runner on FRIDAY MARCH 30th–we’re excited to learn more about BGR! New Orleans and welcome them to the running community. Details on the event can be found below:

You can ask questions, discuss running/walking issues and/or goals, talk about your running/walking experiences and expectations, meet new running/walking buddies, confess what may be holding you back, etc.
Kristin Depp and Sarah Skotty (owners of Run Chicks Run, LLC ) and other Southern Runner staff will be more than happy to get you fitted for new running sneakers and engage us in a little “run chat.” Lauren Darnell and LIFE YOGA + BOUTIQUE will provide information on stretching and a yoga demo and a representative from the New Orleans Track Club will present the club schedule and membership benefits.
There will be special promotions exclusive to the Black Girls RUN! New Orleans Ladies’ Night event, including a DISCOUNT on the purchase of running sneakers! Who doesn’t LOVE a discount?! There will also be a drawing for a cute little door prize!
