Mary Erin Imwalle, local coach and teacher at Mount Carmel Academy, has been racking up the “w’s” this spring. She knabbed a victory at the Elmwood Classic 5K (pictured above, presented by New Orleans Running Systems) and again at the Reveille at Oak Alley 5K. Congratulations to Mary Erin!
In 2009, Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks created Black Girls RUN! in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners. The mission of Black Girls RUN! is to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80% of African-American women are overweight. BGR! wants to create a movement to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.
BGR! is a growing assembly here in New Orleans–a running/walking group striving to increase the presence of African American women in the running community. The New Orleans chapter of Black Girls Run! will host a meet and greet/Ladies Night at Southern Runner on FRIDAY MARCH 30th–we’re excited to learn more about BGR! New Orleans and welcome them to the running community. Details on the event can be found below:

TRAILS, GRUB & BREWS- a night by the guys, for the guys.
Our first annual “Guys Night Out” was filled with running, tacos, Abita beer, trail talk and great giveaways from Forge Racing, Brooks Running, lululemon athletica, and Southern Runner. Our male enthusiasts enjoyed grub from Taceaux Loceaux’s delicious food truck while previewing trail shoes and gear–we will definitely do this again next spring!
