George grew up less than a mile from Audubon Park. His running career began at Newman during basketball’s off-season, where he ran the 440, 880 and high jumped for the Greenie thinclads.
After college at Tulane, George resumed his running habit. By the mid-1970s, he had become an avid runner, racing everything from 5K to the marathon. At the time employed as a banker, George also served terms as President and Treasurer of the New Orleans Track Club and served as Race Director of the Mardi Gras Marathon. Luck and fate, in the form of Mike Andrews, intervened and catapulted him out of banking and a lifetime in the running specialty industry. The two opened Southern Runner on Magazine Street in 1982.
Though years of mileage have taken their toll on his ankles, George is still at the top of his game. He can be found at entertaining customers daily and is always willing to educate anyone interested in learning to purchase the right shoe for their needs – whether running or walking.
